In 1999, a NASA probe intended to orbit Mars crashed causing an estimated $125 million in damage. A subsequent investigation concluded that the problem was that part of the project team used imperial measurements to define critical spacecraft variables, while the rest used the metric system.
The above case may seem absurd, but it highlights the importance of having an engineering review, even if the person who performs it is an expert in the field. A competent inspection could have detected the use of different units of measurement, at a much lower cost than losing a ship.
A good engineering review should have at least three elements:
- Independence of the contracted engineering, to contribute from the client’s point of view.
- Global and integrative vision of the project, to contribute considering all interested parties.
- Experience in constructability, in order to mitigate risks and achieve constructible designs.
The cost-benefit ratio of this type of service is very positive, since it allows deviations to be detected during the engineering phase and not during execution, where mistakes are costly.
Among the tasks performed by ChkIng Ingeniería are the different phases of engineering for a project of this type, developments made by experts with experience in different mining and engineering companies in order to verify that the Chloride Leaching process works under optimal conditions.
